Born
amid lights and fame, this talented Puerto Rican
born artist continues an artistic lineage originating with his parents
Charytin and Elin Ortiz, two admired figures within the Latin
entertainment world. At the young age of 6, Shalim starred in his first
role as an actor in Puerto Rico in the children's television series
"Los Angelitos" (The Little Angels). This successful series aired for
over 5 years throughout Latin America and created foundation for Shalim
to receive much acclaim by an adoring Puerto Rican fan base.
At the age of 13, the family moved to Miami where Shalim perfected his
English, continued his tutelage in the dramatic arts and engaged in
modern dance. In addition, he earned first prize in Improvisational
Acting at Miami-Dade County's Youth Fair.
Shalim relocated to the Dominican Republic to host his own variety
television show "Evolución" (Evolution), which played host
to many
renowned guest celebrities. During this time, he was discovered as a
model and contracted by agencies to represent Pepe Jeans, Ochialli and
Benetton and earned the title of the Dominican Republic's "Outstanding
Model of 1996"; a coveted distinction within the modeling world.
He relocated to Puerto Rico to co-host "Zona de Peligro" (Danger Zone),
a two-hour television program that gave him the opportunity to work
with his celebrity mother. While there, he concurrently began academic
studies in the University of the Sacred Heart in the field of Business
Administration.
After a three-year university stint, he realized that his happiness lay
in the arts and moved back to Miami with the firm resolve of becoming a
singer. Blessed with a warm voice capable of ascending to contrasting
heights, he recorded a demo produced by José Miguel
Velázquez and
rapidly converted his dream into a reality when he was signed as an
artist under the prestigious Crescent Moon Records label.
Under the guidance of Emilio Estefan, Jr. and his renowned production
staff, Shalim polished not only his vocal skills but also his emerging
talent as a lyricist. His gifts combined with the track record of
acclaimed music industry personalities such as Jon Secada,
José Miguel
Velázquez, Randy Balow, Tim Mitchell, George Noriega,
Lawrence Dermer
and Sebastian Krys among others, guarantee his success!
His work today, imbibed with over two years of intense searching, and
thought-provoking themes have allowed him to generate and define a
musical space and a stylistic vocal personality all his own. Indeed,
Shalim's fervent desire is that his music be received with the same
caliber of emotion that forged his artistic path.
To Shalim, music is his life, his passion and the language through
which to express his feelings. It is his wish that the thematic images
in his own music cross boundaries and transcend gender and age.
Shalim's first contemporary pop music album fuses African percussion
and Middle-Eastern and Asian influences with music of his own heritage.
This production is comprised of diverse compositions, unified by his
vocal sensuality. Throughout, Shalim sings the lead and at times the
chorus of most tracks, demonstrating his rich vocal range.
When discussing his music, he is specifically proud of two evocative
tracks he co-wrote entitled "Mata tu Amor," English title "I Can't Let
Go" and the other "Mentira" (Lie). Other songs on the album include:
"La Cruz va por Dentro," "Si Estuviera Junto a Mi," "Nadie Como Tu,"
"Mariposa de Ensueno," "Gitana," "Corazón," and "Come Down".
Shalim is a young man full of visions, dreams and goals. For now, his
most important desire is to open the doors to his music globally and
become entrenched in the hearts of his fans. At the age of 21, Shalim
has already earned much success as an actor and model but we are
confident that he will enjoy a flourishing path towards additional
acclaim as a singer and composer
